This is a list of all the good stuff I’ve found so far, but it’s undoubtedly incomplete and inaccurate as things change over time. Luckily, Amsterdammers are creative types, and many businesses have been coming up with ways to keep serving their customers in different ways. So when it was announced that all restaurants and bars in the Netherlands were being closed down because of the coronavirus pandemic, my first thought was: “Fuck, where am I going to get ramen?” And my second thought was: “How on earth are all those food businesses going to stay afloat?” (In that order – I’m not proud of myself.) And no, that doesn’t even include our supermarket expenses. ![]() When Mr Foodie and I were analysing our finances before we bought our apartment two years ago, we discovered that a third of our expenditure goes on what we categorised as “food & fun”. Add in a couple of lunches, a few coffee dates and the inevitable drinks after work, and the proportion of time I spend at restaurants, cafés and bars in Amsterdam gets even higher. There’s no hard and fast rule, but for dinner it’s at least twice a week. A question I get asked a lot is how often I go out to eat. ![]()
